Wikiquote:Reliable sources

From Wikiquote

This is an proposed policy or guideline. Please update the page as needed, or discuss it on the talk page.

Wikiquote articles should contain reliable, third-party, published sources. Reliable sources are published materials with a reliable publication process; their authors are trustworthy. How reliable a source is depends on context.

Articles with unreliable sources

Articles that have quotes, but not enough sources should be tagged with {{needs sources}}. Articles that have unreliable sources should be tagged with {{NRS}} or {{need reliable sources}}. When reliable sources have been added to the article, the template should be removed.

How to find the websites that an article links to

Special:LinkSearch can be used to search for links to certain websites. For example, this page shows all of the Wikiquote articles that link to www.brainyquote.com.

Examples of reliable sources

  • Google Books
  • News sites (BBC, CNN, The New York Times)
  • Newspapers
  • Published books

The quotes used in these sources have usually been checked carefully, so they are reliable.

Examples of unreliable sources

These sources are unreliable because they do not say where they got the quotes from, so it is not possible to tell if they are real. Please do not add them to articles when more reliable sources can be found.
