Wikiquote:Welcome

From Wikiquote

Wikiquote is a free collection of quotes written by people like you. To make your own free user account go to Special:CreateAccount.

There are three things you can do on Wikiquote. You can read it, you can change it, and you can write it.

There are some things that do not belong on Wikiquote, but other than those, all other changes are good.

Reading

Reading is easy. Go to the Main Page, find a subject that you are curious about, and start looking around. There is also a search box on the side of every page.

If you read something, and you like it, why not drop a note on the page's talk page? First click on the Talk link, to go to the talk page, and then click on the Change this page link when you get to the talk page. We always love to get a note about something you read on Wikiquote.

If there is something that you can't find, just ask us at the information desk, or add the thing you want to be added to our list of requests.

Changing

Everyone can change any page in Wikiquote including this page - just select the Change this page link on the top or bottom of this page if you think it needs help. You don't need to know a lot of special information; you don't even need to be logged in. You can try your hand at editing in our sandbox.

An easy way to start helping is just to use Wikiquote just like you would any other collection of quotations, but when you see a problem like a spelling mistake, or a messy sentence, then go ahead and fix it. Don't be afraid to change something. If you see a way of making a page better, do it. If you make a mistake, it's OK. Somebody else will fix it if you don't want to.

You might find changing pages a bit scary! See Replies to common objections to see why the site works.

Writing

Changing what we know is great, but we want you to give what you know too. You can start a brand new page, or find a page that is already here and add a new section to it. Remember: If you get something wrong, then you, or anyone, can always fix it later.

Note: If you don't want your writing to be edited mercilessly and redistributed at will, then don't submit it. All contributions to Wikiquote are considered to be released under the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL). The GFDL ensures that Wikiquote will remain freely distributable forever. Do not submit copyrighted work unless you have permission from the author to license it under the GFDL. See Wikipedia:Copyrights for more information.

We have a few rules you should look at. You are encouraged to follow the template. Also, the project is focused on building an encyclopedia of quotations, so there are many things that Wikiquote is not.

Have fun!
